The Lambda Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will host a “Community Impact” event on Saturday, Oct. 15 to bring awareness to childhood hunger. Free food will be provided to needy DeKalb County families from the Ronald E. McNair Pearls Closet Food Pantry. Lambda Epsilon Omega will also giveaway more than 300 backpacks filled with power snacks and supplies.

The event will be held at McNair High School, 1804 Bouldercrest Road, SE, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. In addition to the free food and backpacks, the event will feature a budgeting seminar and workshops on hunger.

“Good nutrition is just as important to a child’s future as a quality education,” said Betty Stuckey, President of Lambda Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. “Our chapter encourages residents to come to our event, receive free food and services, and learn about the local resources available to ensure that their kids have the tools they need to succeed.”

Impact Day complements Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s International program focus: Family Strengthening, which targets critical issues facing many families, including lack of food, shelter and financial challenges. The event also supports the organization’s AKA One Million Backpacks℠ initiative, which works to provide substantial support to students.

“Childhood hunger is a solvable problem that can make a significant difference in a student achieving their goals, and this event aim is to ensure that all the children that we serve and their families can receive healthy meals and snacks,” said Kristina D. Carter, Vice President of the chapter.

Feeding America, a nationwide network representing more than 200 food banks, reports that 1 in 7.5 people, or an estimated 755,400 people in metro Atlanta and north Georgia turn to food pantries and meal service programs to feed themselves and their families each year. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. hosts community impact days six times a year where local chapters all over the world collectively work to service their communities on a program target area.

Lambda Epsilon Omega Chapter is the second oldest graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in Metro Atlanta.
