DeKalb NAACP urges General Assembly to defeat voter suppression legislation

As the General Assembly comes to a close today, the NAACP Branch in DeKalb County is urging state legislators to oppose a Senate bill that would reduce the voting time and days for Atlanta voters.

Senate Bill 363, which was filed by Republican Senator Matt Brass of Newnan, would end voting time at 7 p.m., from the current time of 8 p.m. It would also permit only one day of Saturday or Sunday voting, but not both.

DeKalb NAACP President Teresa Hardy said the bill is short-sighted, racist, suppressive, and goes against the wishes of the citizens of Atlanta.

“If Senator Brass is so concerned about the citizens of Atlanta allegedly having a voting advantage over the citizens of Cobb County, then he and the House Governmental Affairs Committee (which has approved the Bill moving forward) would have accepted the suggestion that everyone statewide be allowed to vote until 8 p.m.,” Hardy said in a news release issued today (March 29).

In urging the defeat of Senate Bill 363, Hardy added, “It is disheartening to know that here in the 21st century, some Georgia legislators refuse to represent the interest of all the people or Georgia and still cling to Jim Crow- era practices of voter suppression and discrimination.”

Hardy encourages NAACP members along with other social and civic organizations to contact the Georgia representatives to express opposition to SB 363.
