Speaker series highlights local leading art and science experts

Phi Beta Kappa Arts & Sciences invites the public to hear local experts speak for five minutes each at (En)Lightning Talks Atlanta on Thursday, April 6, 7:30 p.m., at the Woodruff Arts Center, 1280 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta.

Agnes Scott to host 46th Annual Writers’ Festival

The 46th Annual Writers’ Festival will be held on April 6 – 7 at Agnes Scott College, 141 E. College Ave., Decatur.

Atlanta Dogwood Festival set

Hundreds of artists from around the country will have their best artwork on display for the 81st Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival on April 7-9 at Piedmont Park, 400 Park Drive NE, Atlanta.

Attendees will have a chance to view and purchase fine art, hear live music, enjoy fair food from a variety of vendors and even participate in a 5K at Piedmont Park. Sponsor booths are located throughout the festival that will have everything from live radio remotes to great prizes and interactive games. This event is free and open to the public. No pets allowed. Decatur Business Association sets Easter parade and egg hunt


The annual Decatur Business Association Easter Parade and Egg Hunt returns on Saturday, April 8, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church, 308 Clairemont Ave., Decatur.

App workshop for youths


Youths are invited to explore how to make apps on Wednesday, April 5, 2 – 4:30 p.m. at Stonecrest Library, 3123 Klondike Road, Lithonia.

Students will learn basic technology and information organization used in the app making process. This is a hands-on workshop in which youth will use computer coding, information organization and more. This workshop is free and open to the first 12 participants. Chipper Jones to appear for book signing


The Georgia Center for the Book and Eagle Eye Book Shop will welcome Major League Baseball great and future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones on Saturday, April 8, 2 to 4 p.m., at First Baptist Church Decatur, 308 Clairemont Ave., Decatur.

Jones will discuss his new book, Ballplayer, a memoir on his experiences as a member of the Atlanta Braves. Chipper will speak for 50 minutes and then sign books for one hour. Attendees must purchase the book at the event to enter the signing line. Due to time constraints, Chipper Jones will not sign any memorabilia. For more information, visit




Arts and crafts workshop set for parents and children


Get crafty with the kids on Friday, April 7, 11 -11:30 a.m., at the Centerville Community Center, 3025 Bethany Church Road, Snellville.

The “Crafty Mornings with Mom, Dad, or Grandparent and Me” is open to parents and children ages 5 to 12. Bring your child or grandchild and enjoy a time of bonding as you both create fun crafts and take-home items. This is a parent-led activity, so parents or caregivers must remain with child throughout the event.

Chair Tai Chi for seniors and Parkinson’s patients

Seniors are invited to practice Tai Chi on Friday, April 7, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., at the Centerville Community Center, 3025 Bethany Church Rd., Snellville. The slow-paced workshop uses a chair to help seniors improve their balance to prevent falls. People with Parkinson’s disease benefit from functional mobility, gait, strength, cognition, balance, and quality of life.

Community yard sale set

Clean out the house and make some extra cash at the Rockdale community yard sale on Saturday, April 8, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Government Annex Building Parking Lot, 1400 Parker Road, Conyers.

Shop for interesting treasures at this outdoor event including household goods, toys, clothes, and other items. Event organizers reserve the right to disallow items deemed inappropriate.

Tiny house show showcases dozens of tiny, smart houses


The “Smart House, Small House” show will be held on Saturday, April 8, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sunday, April 9, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Georgia International Horse Park, 1996 Centennial Olympic Parkway, Conyers in the Exhibition Center and Charles Walker Arena.

The showroom will include smart home innovations as well as tiny houses on wheels which will be available for purchase. There also will be three home giveaways. Tickets are $12.50 for adults and free for children 12 and under. For more information and discounts, visit or call 706-244-4601.
